Sugar Market Digest | June 2026 Ukraine Output Down 500KT · Tongaat Hulett Liquidation Looms · Tereos Saves R$3.6M

Thousands of jobs at risk if Tongaat Hulett is liquidated – Reuters – The Canegrowers organisation has warned that the possible liquidation of Tongaat Hulett could have devastating consequences for KwaZulu-Natal’s rural economy, with thousands of jobs and millions of tons of sugarcane production at risk.

The industry body issued the warning ahead of a June 17 hearing in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, where arguments will be heard in a liquidation application against the embattled sugar producer.

It said that an unfunded liquidation could bring economic activity linked to Tongaat Hulett’s operations to a halt, leaving many sugarcane growers without a buyer for their cane and putting further pressure on rural communities that depend on the industry.

Tereos’ asset management program totals R$ 3.6 million in direct savings – Novacana – With pressured costs, increased demands for productivity, and increasingly critical harvest windows, operational efficiency has ceased to be merely a maintenance issue and has become a factor of competitiveness in agribusiness.

In this context, Tereos reports that it has been transforming its asset management into “a lever to make operations more predictable and robust” during the harvest season.

According to the company, through a strategic program, it has been possible to integrate continuous equipment maintenance routines, condition monitoring, and digitization of controls to reduce failures and accelerate day-to-day operational decisions.

In practice, according to Tereos, the program addresses points that determine the pace of the harvest: equipment availability, quality of critical inputs, and traceability of components.

With the maturity of the initiative, the company estimates a reduction of R$ 1.1 million in the budget associated with this area.
